BC Interior
Canada's country music capital, at the crossroads of three highways.
The Area
Merritt sits in the Nicola Valley ranchland where the Coquihalla Highway meets the Okanagan Connector and Highway 8, long branded Canada's country music capital and still decorated with murals celebrating that legacy.
Downtown's Walk of Stars and murals recall the decades when the Merritt Mountain Music Festival drew tens of thousands of country fans each summer, and that identity still colours the town even though the festival itself has since ended.
Ranching remains central to the Nicola Valley's economy and character, and Nicola Lake and the surrounding grasslands offer fishing, hiking and horseback riding minutes from downtown. The Coquihalla (Highway 5) puts Merritt about an hour from Kamloops and under two from Vancouver.
As a genuine highway crossroads, Merritt has long served as a stopover and service centre for Interior and Coast travelers alike, and its housing stays notably affordable for a town with such direct highway access to both Vancouver and the Okanagan.
