Kingston

Kingston was the first capital of the Province of Canada and still shows it, with a limestone downtown, Fort Henry above the harbour and the Rideau Canal running north from a waterfront on Lake Ontario.

The downtown is one of the most intact historic cores in the country, centred on Princess Street and City Hall with the market square behind it, and the waterfront path leading east past Confederation Park toward Queen's University.

Queen's University and the Royal Military College shape the city, drawing a large student population that concentrates in the University District and supports a strong rental market. Kingston Health Sciences Centre and the federal institutions are the other major employers.

The Thousand Islands begin just east of the city and the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, runs northeast to Ottawa. Kingston sits midway between Toronto and Montreal on the 401 with VIA Rail service to both.
