Ontario
A manufacturing city that became the centre of Canada's second tech corridor.
The Area
Kitchener anchors Waterloo Region an hour west of Toronto, where old factory blocks along the Grand River have been rebuilt into a technology district that now employs tens of thousands.
Downtown centres on King Street, where the restored Kaufman and Lang tannery buildings house tech offices, and Victoria Park's lake and bandshell give the core an unusual amount of green space. The ION light rail runs the length of the city and links directly into Waterloo, which has reshaped where people are willing to buy.
Established neighbourhoods circle the core: Westmount to the west with mature trees and larger lots, Rockway near the golf course, and Doon in the south beside Conestoga College and the Homer Watson conservation lands. Newer subdivisions push south and east toward the 401.
The Kitchener GO line runs to Toronto and Highway 401 is minutes away, so the city draws both commuters and people leaving Toronto entirely. Prices sit well below the Greater Toronto Area while the job market has become genuinely local rather than commuter dependent.
